Many test-takers are often confused between the IELTS exam and the IELTS for UKVI test. It is common to have confusion between the two tests, as IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are two entirely different tests. Today you will find out the exact difference between the two tests.

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System is the world’s most popular test for English language proficiency. IELTS scores are required for study work and migration purposes in countries where English is the main language of communication such as Australia, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. 

IELTS test has two types depending, IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. If candidates need to prove language proficiency in English to study a higher education degree course they would take IELTS Academic test. What is IELTS for UKVI test?

IELTS for UKVI is an approved Secure English language test (SELT) by the UK Home Office for visa applications to the UK.

Now the main difference between the IELTS test and the IELTS for UKVI test is only that it is a more secure test. In fact, the IELTS for UKVI tests (Academic and General Training) and the regular IELTS tests have the same content, format, scoring and level of difficulty.

Who needs to take IELTS UKVI?

The IELTS UKVI Academic and the IELTS UKVI General Training test is suitable for candidates applying for a Tier 1 and Tier 2 visas for the United Kingdom.

In easier words, students who wish to enter the UK to study a course below Bachelor’s degree level, candidates who wish to work in the UK and people who wish to migrate to the UK must take IELTS UKVI test.

It is also important to note that if your purpose is to study in the UK at a higher education level, which is an undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree, you can take the regular IELTS Academic Test as well. All universities and institutions in the UK accept IELTS Academic scores and you may not need to take IELTS for UKVI Academic version. But, it is always best to check with the university or the institution you are applying to about the exact requirements they have, because if you take the wrong test, you may be required to re-take the correct test again, which would not only cost you time but money as well.
