The importance of university and college rankings for Indian students

When applying to study abroad what is the first thing that you search for? University rankings are an important aspect to consider for students, they can prove to be a significant when you finally decide on which university is the best in the world. On the other hand, do college rankings matter? At present, there are over 17 different global university ranking lists are made available for students and all of them assess different universities and colleges on separate criteria’s, calling ‘their’ Rank 1 university the best in the world. It’s apparent why one would question whether these rankings actually matter and if so, then how relevant are these rankings to international students.

Another question which strikes a student is of the numerous ranking factors available, which one they should follow so they choose the right university as these rankings do make a huge impact on their career. Also one must remember you should never finalise upon a university or a course by blindly entrusting a ranking. Rankings must be included in your process of decision making, but, you should only apply to a university or a college once you have all your facts clear about admission process, life as a student, fees, benefits of the course you are applying to etc.
Should you solely rely on university or college rankings?

All major university rankings, including QS ranking and THE rankings classify their best universities using their own criteria of judgement. Some rankings base their opinions on the quality of education and some rely on data. The best way to go about choosing a highly-ranked university is to rank it on your own criteria. For example, when you are finalising a university, you must enlist the must haves that you seek in a particular university and rank it on the basis on whether a particular college or university qualify on your own criterion or not.

The factors you can choose can include-
•    Your budget
•    You choice of course
•    Accommodations
•    Country
•    Career options
•    Post-study work option in the country

Remember, the final decision will always be yours, but you must do a thorough research before finally making an application. And, if in the process of studying abroad you may require any assistance, you can always look up for study abroad consultants near you. They can guide you by matching your profile with a university that suits you and meets your ranking criterion.
